How to Choose the Right Size Marquee for Your Wedding (New Zealand Guide)
Planning a marquee wedding is exciting. Until you realise you have no idea how big the marquee should be. Too small and everyone feels cramped and uncomfortable. Too big and it can feel empty, echoey, and more expensive than it needs to be.
How to Choose the Right Size Marquee for Your Wedding (New Zealand Guide)
1. Start with your maximum guest count, not your “wish list” number
Most couples start with a rough number in their head – “about 80–100 guests.” For marquee sizing, what really matters is:
- Your maximum seated guest count (including bridal party)
- Whether everyone will be seated at once (plated meal) or more casually (grazing/buffet, cocktail style)
Why this matters for space
- Marquees are typically sized in square metres (m²).
- Each extra 10–20 guests can push you into the next marquee size up.
- It’s much better to size for the upper end of your guest list, so you don’t end up squeezing extra tables in at the last minute.
2. Decide on seating style and layout (this changes the size you need)
How you seat your guests changes how efficiently you can use the space.
Round tables vs long trestle tables
- Round tables
- Feel traditional and formal.
- Use more floor space per guest.
- Easier for guests to talk to more people at their table.
- Long trestle tables
- Feel modern, relaxed, and “banquet-style.”
- Fit more guests into the same footprint.
- Create strong visual lines inside a marquee.
Because of this, two weddings with the same number of guests can need different marquee sizes depending on table style and layout.
You’ll also need to allow space for:
- Head table / top table
- Dance floor
- Bar area
- Buffet or grazing table
- Band or DJ
- Possible lounge area (sofas, coffee tables, etc.)
3. Plan for NZ weather and rainy day contingencies
New Zealand weather can change quickly, even in summer. A marquee that’s “big enough” for a fine evening might feel very tight if everyone has to stay under cover all night.
Think about:
-
Wet-weather drinks reception
If you planned to have canapés and drinks outside, ask:
“If it pours down, can all of that happen inside the marquee instead?”
If not, you probably need more space. -
Sidewalls and wind
With sidewalls down due to wind or rain, the marquee can feel more enclosed and smaller. Extra width or length gives you breathing room. -
Space for umbrellas, coats & wet shoes
A small extra area near the entrance for umbrellas and coats can stop the main space from feeling cluttered.
4. The most common marquee sizing mistakes (and how to avoid them)
a) Only sizing for dinner, not the whole evening
Many couples calculate space based on tables and chairs only, forgetting:
- Dance floor
- Band/DJ
- Photo booth
- Cake table
- Gift/guestbook table
Once these are added, the marquee can suddenly feel tight and awkward.
Fix: Always think through the full evening flow – from guests arriving, to speeches, to dancing – and allow space for each “zone”.
b) Not allowing for caterers and staff movement
Catering staff need to move between tables, carry trays, refill water and wine, and clear plates.
Fix: Avoid packing tables too close together. A little extra width between rows of tables makes the whole evening feel smoother and calmer.
c) Forgetting about extra evening guests
If you have evening-only guests joining for dessert and dancing, the marquee that feels fine during dinner can suddenly feel crowded later.
Fix: When in doubt, size for “peak” occupancy – the moment when you’ll have the most people inside at once.
5. Interactive NZ marquee size guide & calculator
You don’t need to work all of this out by hand.
Silver Fern Marquees has a marquee size guide and calculator specifically for New Zealand weddings that takes into account:
- Number of guests
- Seating style and layout
- Whether you want space for a dance floor
- Extra buffer so the space doesn’t feel cramped
